What We Do

Building Skills, Communities, and a Sustainable Future

The Alliance for Bio-based Construction in Ukraine (ABCU) is helping to rebuild Ukraine using natural, renewable materials — and empowering people with the skills to do it themselves.

Through our Building Programme, we combine hands-on training, expert design, and sustainable construction methods to create healthy, energy-efficient buildings. Every project is not only a step toward a greener future but also an opportunity for veterans, widows, internally displaced people, and local residents to gain new livelihoods and restore their communities.

Training for Veterans, Widows, IDPs, and Local Volunteers

At the heart of our work is practical training. Participants learn modern, sustainable building techniques — from constructing with straw bales to plastering with natural clay and lime.

Our team includes six experienced, STEP-certified trainers (Straw Bale Building Training for European Professionals), supported by additional experts from the European Straw Building Association (ESBA). Together, we help people build valuable new skills while contributing to the recovery of their communities.

Design and Engineering of Straw Bale Buildings

ABCU’s team includes four highly qualified (master) architects specialising in straw bale and eco-friendly design. Their combined experience ensures that every building we design meets the highest standards of safety, comfort, and sustainability.

Using the latest natural building techniques, our architects create spaces that are beautiful, durable, and energy-efficient — designed for people and the planet.

Construction and Project Management

Our STEP-trained professionals lead on-site training in straw bale construction and natural plastering — using clay finishes indoors and lime on the exterior.

Each site is overseen by a full-time project manager, ensuring everything runs smoothly, safely, and on schedule. To support collaboration, a dedicated interpreter is always available.

Renovation and Hybrid Projects

ABCU also supports energy-efficient renovations and hybrid construction — combining traditional buildings with straw bale extensions or insulation upgrades.

Our team provides expert advice, technical guidance, and training to help improve comfort, reduce energy costs, and make existing homes more sustainable.

Straw Bale Builder Certification

Participants who complete our adapted course receive an official Straw Bale Builder Certificate.

This certification opens the door to future ABCU projects and provides ongoing opportunities to gain hands-on experience as part of a growing network of sustainable builders in Ukraine and beyond.

Sustainable Materials and Supply Chain

Quality materials are the foundation of every great building. ABCU maintains strict standards for the straw bales, timber, and prefabricated modules we use.

We’re developing local supply chains to ensure that materials are responsibly sourced and cost-effective. Whenever possible, we prioritise local procurement — first from the surrounding community, then across Ukraine, and only internationally when necessary.
